What is Sound Healing?

Sound Healing is a powerful therapy that combines various healing sounds, music, and sound instruments to improve our overall well-being through creating a beautiful experience in which the mind, body, and spirit are reunited and awakened through music, sound, and frequency.

Sound Healing Instruments that are easy to play can be applied both on the body and off-the-body, whilst also incorporating vocal sounds and tones. Sound Therapy techniques are delivered using instruments such as Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, tuning forks, and more, both during a one-on-one sound healing session or sound bath.

Musical Mandalas curates a unique sound healing experience utilizing a variety of traditional and non-traditional sounds to create a multi-dimensional experience to maximize the effects of the sound experience. This includes crystal singing bowls, synthesizer, keyboard, guitar, vocals, windchimes, rain sticks, drums, nature sounds, and more which are tuned to 432 hz. These unique soundscapes are designed to increase awareness while providing a healing space for deep relaxation, inner peace, and healing.

History of Sound Healing

Sound healing has been practiced for thousands of years. Even before sound tools were available, the sounds of nature such as the waves of an ocean crashing against shore or the song of birds were considered to be the original sound healers.

Sound healing has been practiced and shared by many traditions across the world including the Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean, and Native American cultures. Wherever humans congregated throughout time, sound healing has been an integral part of the community and lifestyle.

Shamans, priests, priestesses, healers, masters and medicine men and women from the four corners of the earth have worked with sound in sacred ways since ancient times and have created many sound instruments to assist them.

Benefits of Sound Healing

Sound healing has gained popularity in western culture in recent decades as a holistic alternative to medication and other treatments. It is believed that certain sounds, tones, and vibrations have an impact on the human body and could heal various ailments in the body such as anger, fear, or sadness. Sound healing is also supportive for pain management, improvement cognitive function, better sleep, reducing stress and anxiety, and more.

In recent years scientists have found that music has an amazing ability to heal everything from depression to arthritis, hypertension and multiple sclerosis. The effects of music on the body are numerous and well-documented. Studies have shown that Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K448) can reduce epileptic seizures and that Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 can reduce chronic pain, speed recovery from surgery and lower blood pressure.

Other studies show that listening to music can calm the amygdala, an area of the brain that controls emotions like fear and anxiety. This may be why music therapy is so effective in treating mental health disorders like PTSD.

Science of Sound Healing

We understand that sound vibrations affect the body at a cellular level, which can have a profound effect on our health. For example, when we speak or sing, our vocal cords vibrate at a certain frequency and produce sound waves that travel through the air. Similarly, when an instrument is played, these sound waves are produced at certain frequencies and they begin to move outward until they encounter a solid object, such as our eardrums. Our ears then translate these frequencies into sounds we recognize as music.

These sounds are both audible and inaudible to the human senses. Regardless of our capacity to hear or feel sound waves, they manifest as cause and effect, not only to us as human beings but also to the wider world around us. Sound waves wash over us at every second of every minute, and hour of every day and continue to vibrate endlessly.

The sound vibrations of the sound healing instruments penetrate deep into the tissue. This improves blood circulation and metabolism, regulates muscle tension and deeply stimulates the tissue. Moreover, regeneration and repair mechanisms are stimulated.  Sound healing is both activating and relaxing – so it also has a refreshing effect.

The oscillation, or resonance, of molecules, triggered by the sound vibrations cause alternating compression and relaxation of cells. It is, in effect, a form of massage at a cellular level deep within the tissue undergoing the treatment.

How Sound Effects the Human Body

Everything in the universe has its own vibrational frequency and interacts with other frequencies. The belief that music can affect the body and mind goes back many years, and there are references to music therapy in ancient Indian, Chinese and Greek texts. Plato and others outlined specific vibrational tonalities associated with each organ, gland and function in the body. Plato also had extensive discussions on musical theory in books such as Timaeus and the Laws.

When you listen to the right kind of music, it can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, put you in a more relaxed state, help you breathe more deeply and think more clearly, create an overall sense of well-being, and even help your body heal itself.

Stress and trauma are held in the body and manifest as disease, dis-ease and discordant energy. Sound can literally transform our bodies on a cellular level by changing our vibration on a subatomic level.

Sound healing is therefore able to shift us from feeling unwell to well.

Sound therapy uses sound vibration to restore balance and health within the physical and energetic body. Sound healing is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to the body/mind of a person with the intention of bringing them into a state of harmony and health. It is based on the idea that all matter (including the human body) is vibrating at specific frequencies.

Disease, illness and pain are thought to be caused by blockages or imbalances in these natural vibratory rates. When these blockages are removed, health and well-being is restored. Sound healing can be accomplished using a variety of instruments such as Tuning Forks, Gongs, Singing Bowls and many more. One instrument which has been used for thousands of years for sound healing is our voice. The use of sound to create healing and transformation has been part of many ancient traditions from around the world.
